North River Falls Jeep Excursion: Cape Breton’s Biggest Waterfall & Margaree Valley Drive
Drive forest service roads into the Cape Breton Highlands, spot moose and abandoned farmsteads, then hike to a cliff-top lookout over North River Falls—the highest waterfall in Nova Scotia. Choose to descend to the spray for a closer, more challenging experience.
The Experience
Before You Go
Wear grippy boots
The ATV trail can be muddy and uneven; ankle-supporting boots with a good sole reduce the risk of slips on the descent and return climb.
Bring layers and rain protection
Weather on the high plateau shifts quickly; pack a light waterproof shell and an insulating mid-layer even on warm days.
Plan for the optional descent
The route to the base is steeper and takes 30–40 minutes each way—only attempt if you have intermediate fitness and solid footing.
Hydrate and snack before the climb back
There are no services on the trail; carry at least 1–2 liters of water and energy food for the return uphill.
